HOW MOTLEY CAKES CAME TO BE...
Welcome. I am Elizabeth Angelo, owner of Motley Cakes. My career experience exceeds 27 years in the culinary industry with a strong background in cake decorating and pastries as well as, savory cooking and catering. I spent my younger years aspiring to be a chef. That path lead me to train with some of the best chefs in Kansas City and in amazing restaurants. As I honed my culinary skills, I was given an extensive education in many foods, cultures, and techniques, all of which became a sort of life style applied in every day work and home routines. Even my son says, "behind you!" when passing by.
Working in a commercial kitchen isn't for the faint of heart. It requires a certain level of passion and madness not everyone will understand. And it is both that pushed me into sweets, as I was determined to work with a specific chef, and the only position available in his kitchen was the dessert station. Long story short, I had an aptitude for it. And just like savories, I wanted to learn and do everything.
In the kitchen, you strictly follow the chefs menu but desserts and cake decorating gave me a artistic outlet I couldn't have anticipated. And with the evolution of food in television and the internet, customers came to me with wild ideas to transform into edible works of art.
Motley Cakes came to exist through the growing need for an exciting and credible bakery/pastry shop in the Northland area. After many years in the culinary industry, I began to develop the idea of my own business which gave me an outlet for my many ideas and desires to become involved in the community. The determination grew incredibly though, with the passing of my brother David.
David was immensely influential as I developed the products and personality for the bakery. David often had product and design ideas that I have implemented over the years, and we worked closely together (both having a flare for dramatics and rock and roll music), designing the company logo and product line.
David took his own life November 3rd, 2015. Since then, I have been working diligently and single handedly to bring our shared dream to life. In doing so, I have since incorporated plans affiliating myself and Motley Cakes with local organizations in support and awareness of mental illness and suicide prevention in memory of my brother. My beliefs are, through Motley Cakes and our involvement in the community, David will continue to live on and make a difference, and in doing so, many others struggling with these matters will too.
I believe that food brings us together. Ours will be the ties that bind us with our customers and employees. Together we will grow.
